Aoraki Maths Competition

The annual Aoraki Maths Competition was a resounding triumph this year, with students from Years 7 to 10 showcasing their mathematical prowess in a series of challenging tests.

On Tuesday, 4 August 2026, Year 7 and 8 students put their problem-solving skills to the test, tackling a range of intricate mathematical puzzles. The competition was fierce, with students demonstrating exceptional talent and dedication.

St Joseph's Ashburton won a close-fought Year 7 competition, getting all 20 questions correct—an impressive achievement. Gleniti pipped Waihi to second place, winning on a tie-breaker question as both teams ended on 19 points.

Ashburton Intermediate won the Year 8 competition once again with 14 points. Waihi was second with 11 points, completing a successful night for both schools being on the podium, and Opihi College managed to beat the rest of the chasing pack with 10 points.

A huge shout-out to all Year 8 competitors who faced some difficult questions this year. All teams can hold their heads high as, despite lots of unsuccessful attempts at questions, not one team gave up, and runners were still sprinting hard at the end to gain more points.

On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, Year 9 and 10 minds locked in to tackle an intense series of maths challenges. Speed, sharp thinking, and team synergy were the names of the game.

St Kevin's was well out in the lead to take the Year 9 title, scoring 19 points, with Craighead and Waitaki Boys' taking second and third with 12 points each.

Waitaki Boys' won the final competition of the evening with a nail-biting win over the returning Year 9 champions, Timaru Boys' High School. Waitaki Boys' scored quickly late on to overtake TBHS with three minutes remaining, winning on 17 points. TBHS came second with 16 points, and Timaru Girls' High School came third with 13 points.

Thank you to all the schools that entered, the teachers and students for making it such a good event, the markers from Craighead and Timaru Boys' High, the parents supporting the event, and all the teachers on the night. You all make this such a wonderful competition for everyone involved.
